In December 2016 Canada released its phase 2 guidance for its “WHIMS” compliance. WHIMS stands for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and is Canada's national hazard communication standard.

The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling for chemicals (GHS) has been incorporated in WHMIS and aligns WHMIS with GHS in the United States and other Canadian trading partners.

Canada officially adopted GHS on February 11, 2015 and implemented a series of phased-in compliance deadlines scheduled starting on June 1, 2017.
